Courthouse Couture

If you have decided to have a small civil ceremony, you still want everything to look and feel perfect– even if you’re in the surroundings of a courthouse or other area. In addition to looking beautiful,  you will find that there are other great places to get married at if you aren’t doing “the big wedding thing”.  Once you have your location locked in, think about your outfit.

You so  don’t want to “T-shirt and jeans” this thing, but you know that showing up in full bridal regalia is out of the question (I have seen it happen, and it is just saaaadddd, luxelings…just sad).  Depending on your style, you have so many options– from stately to flirty to romantic to chic.  The key is finding the happy medium; you don’t want to be mistaken for counsel in a court case, but you also don’t want to look like you’re going to the prom either.

It is completely up to you if you want to wear white or some shade of it; however finding a colored dress will increase the chances of you actually wearing it again.  If you are looking to hold some sentimental nostalgia when you look at your dress, and don’t plan on doing a larger wedding later, then opt for white or ivory.

What’s a Holiday Without a Martini?

Well, a tragedy, in my opinion.

Great news! You can avoid deep depression at your next holiday get together by zipping right over to Pier 1 and picking up one of Stirrings’ awesome Drink Mix Caddies.  The assorted flavors that come in the caddy are Simple Cosmopolitan, Simple Mojito, Simple Margarita and Simple Pomegranate Martini, all in eight ounce sizes.  And guess what, luxeling?  With every Drink Mix Caddy Purchase, you get a FREE Margarita Rimmer.  Isn’t life divine?

Be sure to check out this great decorating idea from Stirrings– “Thanksgiving Inspiration“.

Mimio :: The Artistry of Paper

I stumbled across the fabulous designs of Mimio while reading a magazine the other day.  It was instant romance.  I loved the papers– and the designs were so rich, I felt like I could feel the complex textures through the pictures.

Jackets! Jackets! Jackets!

One of the hottest trends hitting the runways this fall are jackets!  Personally, I love a good jacket, especially one that is tailored to fit and can complement almost any outfit from pencil skirts to jeans.  But, what about bridal wear?

Enter the bolero.

Shawls are great, but can be a tad bit worrisome.  You have to actually hold it or let it hang;  just keeping up with it can add an additional task to an already harried day.  Boleros can add additional style to your bridal look as well as serve its function of keeping you warm.  For example, you’ll look a lot more stunning in your bridal bolero than your new husband’s tuxedo jacket at your outdoor reception.  With the entrance of winter and fall weddings, we see the influx of many bridal jackets, boleros and cover ups.  Because there are so many options, you want to be sure you are picking one that is right for your style of dress and the season of your wedding.

Some designers create boleros to go with a few collections in their lines, while some bridal salons will make a bolero for you if you bring in or purchase the lace or desired fabric of your choice.  Another great perk of wearing a bolero is the ability to maintain your shape while still adding  a bit of style.  It’s not bulky like some bridal jackets, so you are sure to stay along the same lines for your look as you do without it.

From My Bar to Yours…

imageI was reading YumSugar, as always, and loved how they blogged about the new Food and Wine Cocktail Book for 2008.  This is perfect if you are looking for the signature drink to kick off your reception or event.

This made me think about my other favorites, Hip Sips:  Modern Cocktails to Raise Your Spirits and The Art of the Bar: Cocktails Inspired by the Classics.  I think that food is only good if your chef has had a glass of wine while they have been cooking, and a party ain’t a party unless the cocktails are flowing! (FYI, if you’re coming to my house…you’re leaving “happy“)

Here are some of my favorites:

Peanut Butter & Jelly

I know you don’t believe me, but you really do have to try it. It smells and tastes just like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!

.5 oz Chambord

.5 oz Frangelico

Some people take it as a shot, but when it was first given to me, I had it in a martini glass and that’s how it should be.  Completely divine.

Crazy in Love

This one is strong, but oooohhhhh so good!  Don’t drink it if you have to drive….anywhere for the next two days.

3 oz Apple Cider (Not a lot of people have this on hand, so you can mix it with apple juice instead)

1 oz Gin

2 oz Rum

2 oz Tequila

2 oz Vodka

Perfect Set

Perfect for your sweet tooth!

5 oz Apple Cider (you can sub apple juice here, but the cider is definitely worth it!)

3 oz Apple Schnapps

.5oz Cinnamon Schnapps

1 oz Ice

1 oz Vodka

Rim the glass with caramel. Add an apple slice on the side or a thin slice on the top to garnish.

I will stop here, because I’m pretty sure we’ll have to check your blood-alcohol level from just reading this.  But don’t worry…I’ll be back with more 🙂

Hot Color Combos: Wintered Rose and Shitake

winteredrose-shitake For this week’s hot colors, we’re taking another cue from the Pantone Fall 2008 Color Report.  Wintered Rose and Shitake are a different play on the already tired pink and brown theme.  Instead of drawing attention with bold statement colors, these muted tones are more sultry and more complex.  Last week, we went for bold and contrast.  This week, we’re a bit more subdued.  These deep shades can resonate so much– but for me, it was the romance. I saw nothing but modern elegance and lushness when I saw this mauve and brown shade.  The ivory added a touch of innocence at the same time.

Hot Color Combos: Purple and Marigold

pm I think grown women should have grown women colors, don’t you?  I’ve seen some demure things that are gorgeous, but I really do love it when a bride gets a little "risque" with color.  It just says so much about her personality and where she is going with her event when she experiments with vibrant colors.  Color just makes you feel sexy, alive, mysterious, daring, beautiful…. It can be kind of hard to feel that way when you are dressed up like a Disney Princess.

Ever since Michelle Obama wore her fist bumping purple dress, more people are falling in love with the shade.  Some of us who closely follow the Pantone Color Trends saw it coming.  Even though we’re seeing the standard influx of Tiffany Blue and Yellow, more bolder and richer colors are making their presence known.  (FYI, this really makes you look like the rockstar bride when you choose a color that is hot an can be worn again successfully without looking like a young maiden that interacts with talking candlesticks and clocks, while being courted by a beast).  On the fair side, Trends are fleeting– but guess what, so is your wedding. It’s not going to happen at the same time every year– it represents where you are at that particular moment.  No, you shouldn’t pick a color just because it’s "trendy".  "Trendy" will look dated in a few months or years.  When it is reflective of who you are, that my friends, is what stands the test of time.

Smock.

Bella Figura is at it again!  The awesome letterpress company introduced Smock– it’s sister company, with invites and card designed by Amy Graham Stigler.

Just like Bella Figura, Smock is sustainably letterpressed on bamboo paper in the Syracuse, New York print shop. After years in the making, Smock is wedding invitations, social notes, thank you’s, party invites, place cards, gift tags, gift wrap, and more. I thought that using bamboo was an interesting concept.  And so does Bella Figura and Smock.  They say

Why use bamboo? Bamboo is a truly sustainable and renewable resource. It also happens to make (hands down) the prettiest paper out there. Bamboo grows without pesticides or fertilizer and is non-GMO. In addition, bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet; it generates up to 35% more oxygen than hardwood trees; it absorbs four times as much carbon as hardwood; and it can detoxify wastewater and improve soil quality. We partnered with a 500-year-old European paper mill to develop this fine artisan paper just for us, and we’re proud to be the first print shop in the U.S. to offer printing on a luxury bamboo paper

Beauty Pageant Tips of the Iceberg

When featured on The Smart Planner, I admitted that hemorrhoid cream was a must have in my 911 kits at weddings.  I have had people ask me what else I have in that monstrosity of a Emergency Kit that might be unconventional.  As I mentioned before, a lot of this came from competing in pageant circuits where quick fixes are a must.

The infamous hemorrhoid cream— This not only helps for those hard earned dark under eye circles from partying all night at the bachelorette party, but also for reducing the appearance of cellulite under unforgiving fabrics.

Vaseline— This is an oldie but goodie.  File this under the "gross but works" category.  Slip a little on your teeth and it helps you to keep smiling during all of your pictures.  It also helps for not getting your lips stuck on your teeth during the shoot as well.

Apple Cider Vinegar– Take a tablespoon or two before eating (and you must eat…not a heavy meal, but eat something!) to reduce bloating.  Also good for sunburn (We get a lot of bridesmaids and brides who lay out at their resorts or at the beach and consequently burn).

Duct tape— Ugly as it is, Hollywood Tape has NOTHING on duct tape.  I’ve created the so many perfect angles and lines by sculpting a body with duct tape…and can secure speaker cords with the same roll.

Hollisters Medical Adhesive — Typically used to adhere prosthetic body parts, perfect for adhering dresses to the body (think of the infamous Jennifer Lopez Grammys dress, which is, in my opinion, the best dress EVER).

Vapon No Tape— Used to adhere lace front wigs for stage productions and Glamzillas, perfect for attaching (flawlessly) bandaids or cushions to tough shoes that cause burns on the back of the heels or on toes.  Also good for affixing rhinestones to the body and face.

Bronzing powder— To create the illusion of slight or deep cleavage .

Dermablend body makeup— Perfect for covering up tattoos, deep blemishes and bruises.  (Note to you: it might take a combination of shades to get a perfect match).

White Eyeliner— For the corner of the eyes– makes them pop and look bigger in pictures.

Visine— It gets the red out! Not only out of eyes, but also out of pimples. Helps making the concealing process a lot easier.

Other tips:

  • If you are wearing pantyhose, get a good quality brand and soak them in salt water prior to wearing them. This will decrease the odds of them running.
  • When you stand, angle your hips so that you can elongate the body.  It will look beautiful in pictures.
  • Don’t wear shoes the same color as your dress (if it is short)– it will make you look stumpy.
  • Avoid big necklaces that will compete with your face.
