{Papier Tuesday} Ink Umbrella

image

Even the name makes me smile 🙂

(Yes, it’s Wednesday, and we’re late…but let’s pretend it’s Tuesday. Thanks. You’re a doll)

When I had a chance to look over Ink Umbrella’s uber cute designs, I knew of several friends, clients, and colleagues that would be perfectly matched with this design company.

The designs are smart, sassy and just cute!  So what exactly does Ink Umbrella mean?  There are so many awesome services available to clients with the company that they all fall under one “ink umbrella” (I told you—smart!).

It takes a lot to capture the personality of a client.  Ink Umbrella does not cower at the challenge, and they succeed greatly.  The designs are so fun, elegant and can be completely reflective of your personality—or better yet, your event’s personality.  From the layouts to the color combinations, there is something for everyone (even I found myself just thinking of a reason to get anything on the site!)—they truly make you fall in love.

Even business owners can take part in the fun, as Ink Umbrella can assist you with branding, marketing, business cards and your logo!

Gilt By Association

You are going to see a lot of gold in 2009.  It’s vintage elegance will be the new bling of the year. Gold can be a rich (pardon the pun) color, and when paired with texture, it can create quite a refined look.  However, if overdone, it can look gaudy—and what was once your subdued elegant event is now the Mr. T of weddings.

Not fabulous.

How to Get It Right

Gold is powerful—its opulence should be used sparingly to get the full effect.  You could opt for gold bridesmaid dresses to add color, like these from Impression Bridal (styles 16377 and 1642).  They aren’t a brassy, overpowering gold.  Instead, they are a soft gold.  But if you did use these and went with gold laced decor, it would lose its meaning and appear overdone.

Linens

If you go gold, incorporate some texture, like BBJ’s Golden Shantung.  It’s rich texture really does the color justice.  You could also use gold sheer overlays to soften some colors or liven up a drab white or ivory standard linen, all the while, adding a hint of your “gilty” pleasure.

If you opt for a solid gold satin, bring out the color by using a patterned linen of another color.  For example, BBJ’s Ivory Deauville would be amazing over a solid gold lamour.  If you really want to “do it up”, you could also check out their Gold Deauville;with its hint of deep red, you can really luxe up your linens.

Decor

Depending on your color scheme, you could take full advantage of a gold base by adding regal colors such as reds or purples.  All white flowers can also have a rich but subtle effect.  Incorporating golden containers, candelabras, candlesticks, chargers, lined glassware, etc. are other ways to play up this opulent theme.  Gold chiavaris are also a great way to add opulence to your decor.  Even if you find yourself loving the idea of gold, but don’t want to fully commit your linens (or budget), look for gold runners which can be custom-made or rented to match your theme.

Tying in the Other Details

grapeleaves wrought ironWith edible gold leaf and powders, you can take your affinity for the precious metal to a new level with your signature drink and cake. Adding gold touches to your wedding cake is a sure fire way to go from bridal dessert to work of art.  The same can be said for your signature drink.  At last year’s Governor’s Ball, Patron served 4000 of their very own siggies—the Patron Red Carpet.  What was this divinity in a glass?  Red raspberry tequila drenched in gold (ok, just rimmed in gold—but “drenched” sounds so luxe.)  You can find a video of the recipe at the above link.

Recap:

  • Don’t over do it!  You don’t gold to compete with your design, but complete it.
  • Remember the details—this could be something as small as chargers and flatware. Little things make a big impact.
  • If you feel like you’ve over done it, you probably have. Scale back a bit and see if your vision is still being conveyed.
  • Go luxe or go home 🙂

{Papier Tuesday} Luscious Verde

I am a paperphile.

When I saw Luscious Verde online, I was so impressed with the designs and concepts of their invitations.  When i was blessed enough to receive samples, well, it was pretty much over for me.  I am in love with Luscious Verde’s work!  Just look at the name—that in itself is pure fabulousness.

The modern elegance is a breath fo fresh air to some of the constantly overplayed designs that have saturated the stationery market as of late.  The heavy stock, classic designs, and handcrafted touches make you feel like you are holding a work of art instead of a mere wedding invitation.  They are all so refined—perfect for the couple who wants their personality to shine through.  Luckily for you, they are carried in several retail outlets across the country for you to see these gorgeous invites in person. But definitely take a moment to get to know the wonderful ladies at LV. As a mom, I loved their story, as well as the way they give back each month to the community.  Moreover, in addition to their recycling and giving back efforts, they have developed HOOT—which creates the most dynamic designs with post-consumer waste paper, which is better for the environment (learn more about HOOT)

They were even sweet enough to send me some handcrafted thank you cards—and a pirate notepad that my little ones have confiscated to leave random ransom demands in my work tote… all signed “Captin Jack Sparro”

Thank you again, Luscious Verde team for sharing your wonderful designs with me and I can’t wait to share them with our brides!

PS—be sure to check out their blog and enter their $5,000 custom stationery giveaway!

Southern Weddings Magazine Launch Party

Southern Weddings Magazine

I had the honor of attending the Southern Weddings magazine launch party in Atlanta at the Dogwood Restaurant.  Lara and her talented team with the help of some other great pros put together an awesome party.  The party was a hit!  I am so glad that I made the trip and got to see so many good friends.  If you’ve been a fan of the Southern Weddings blog, this is a definite treat.

If You’re Luxe & You Know It: Mona + Brad

When I met Mona and Brad, I instantly loved them.  Everything about them just made me feel like we were old friends.  We met when they were considering Jekyll Island for their ceremony and reception. Unfortunately, due to the strict rules of having events on the beach, they decided to move their wedding to South Carolina.  Even though we did not work together on their wedding, Mona promised to keep in touch.

Mona is one of those women that is stunningly gorgeous…well no. Ridiculously gorgeous, and has the best personality (after all, like attracts like LOL!).  So it was a real treat to get her wedding pictures in our email and see all of the wonderful things she and Brad had planned.  She even shared some of her thoughts on her planning process and the wedding with us.

Check out the rehearsal dinner, which was a costume party (I told you, they are awesome!):

 Rehearsal

Gorgeous shots from the wedding:

I loved all of the fun and emotions at the party as well:

 Mona and Brad2

C+D:  What did you find was the hardest and easiest part of planning?

M:  The hardest part – was defining the thin line between people "helping you" and "asking nicely" what they want!!
I had individuals on the day before and day of my wedding asking me to include this and amend that… it was very disappointing.
The easy part – was saying "NO" to those who thought they were "helping" or "asking nicely"…(LOL)

C+D:  How did you choose your venue?

M:  From day one – my husband and  I knew we wanted a beach wedding in a town/place that was easily accessible for all guests.

C+D:  Your concept for the rehearsal dinner was genius, what made you come up with it?

M:  A few things –
1.) Who doesn’t like Halloween?
2 ) I had to bring together two families who were different in race, religion, culture, living habits, etc – what better way to break the ice than to be in costume with a few cocktails!!!
3) It was the right thing to do – with so many people coming to support us. The least I could do was have a nice social.

C+D:  If you could relive one moment of your wedding, what would it be?

M:  Ahhh one moment – there were so many moments – but the best moment was walking down the aisle and realizing that my world and my life, would ultimately sky-rocket into eternally happiness, by marrying the my best friend and my partner for life.

Thank you Mona and Brad for allowing me to show off your stellar taste and incomparable love for each other.  And a very special thank you to Gene Ho, and the talented Nadean Bruehlman of Gene Ho Photography who did the photography.

Haute off the Press: Haute Papier

I will be the first to say, I think this is absolutely divine!  I love how well thought out and intricate the designs are.  All of the “stock” sets from Le Catalogue are available in flat or letterpress, which allows you to add extra embellishment (or not) to your favorite design.  What is even more thoughtful, is that each set is named after an acclaimed romantic author.  The Couture line takes inspiration from the clients’ wedding themes and creates a wonderful paper experience!  What was even more enthralling than the designs were the awesome bios of the creator and president of the company– Sarah and Erin.

From the Catalogue line:

Browning— A beautiful damask invitation and wedding paper set.

Emerson– A lovely swirl invitation and wedding paper set.

I was so very impressed by their couture lines; I think you will be too!

From the Couture line:

Jessicaa Save the Date made from a vintage postcard from Washington DC.

Sexy and Smoldering

The beauty world lost a true revolutionary when Kevyn Aucoin passed away years ago. If you don’t know his amazing story of love, perseverance and sheer talent, it is one that will leave you stronger and misty-eyed.  Having worked lovingly on the faces of such beauties as Julia Roberts (above), Tina Turner, Christy Turlington, and Vanessa Williams, learning his tips and tricks keep you fabulous.  With his books, Face Forward and Making Faces, which are staples in my library, he introduced a new type of beauty to the world and industry.

I have had a lot of people ask me how I do my “smoky eye” look or facial highlighting and bronzing. I learned it all from Kevyn.  Luckily enough, after his passing, his site is still maintained and his line of cosmetic tools are for sale.

Here are the instructions for the “smoky eye” from Kevyn’s site:

Eyes are an area where you can really have fun and be quite creative. Unlike the lips, which can be altered only slightly in shape before they start to look awkward, the eyes have no real set limitations. Each shape you create, whether with shadows, pencils, or liner, can take you into completely different realms. From “smoky” to “defining,” subtle to high-drama, depending on the face you chose, the eye area is integral for a successful look.

To create the “alluring” eyeshadow shape shown on Julia Roberts, you’ll need the following tools and products:

concealer and face powder
powder and sponge
black eyeliner pencil
neutral beige powder eyeshadow
sponge tip applicator
eyeshadow brush
eyelash curler and black mascara
apricot blush and blush brush
neutral lip color and lip brush

If possible, you should remove contact lenses before working on the eye area and put them back in when you’re done.

Use concealer sparingly, followed by loose powder applied with a powder sponge (not velour). (Optional: leave a little powder under the eye, to catch falling shadow.)

Apply black eyeliner pencil to upper and lower inner eye area. Smudge pencil gently into the lashes.

Using either a sponge-type applicator or shadow brush (your choice), blend pencil into smoky circle around eye.

First, using the eyeshadow applicator, softly retrace penciled area (from lashes outward) with black eyeshadow. The idea is to smoke up the area. Remember to use as little as possible to get the best results.

Next, using the eyeshadow brush, arc into the crease of the eyelid, under and softly outward from the corner. (Concentrate the shadow on the outer half of the eye.)

Use beige powder eyeshadow to highlight browbone and eyelid. (You can even sweep a little bit slightly down the side of the nose and under the eye.)
Curl the lashes and apply black mascara.

Finally, fill in the mouth (using a lip brush) with neutral lip color (in Julia’s case, for this photo, no lip pencil outline was necessary), and dust the cheeks with apricot blush.

Julia’s brows were bleached. (This is always optional, but see how it, with the pale mouth, softens and affects the overall balance of the face.)

Rest in peace, Kevyn…you are missed, but not forgotten!

Courthouse Couture…For Him

Last week, we discussed looking fabulous for your civil ceremony.  We’ll give the guys the same riot act that we gave the ladies– “Don’t T-Shirt and jeans it!” We could go a step further and ask that you refrain from the typical oxford shirt and khaki pants.  You’re getting married…not giving a book report.  You could go jacketless, with your tie, but then you would look like a corporate guy on his lunch break.  Nevertheless, it’s still an opportunity to showcase your style in different ways. Just as you would if you were getting tuxes, find out what color she is wearing or let her help you pick a look if she is ultra-CIA operative about her dress.  You want to make sure that you both coordinate and complement each other.  In your case, you have the wonderful opportunity in investing in a suit or blazer– which is the gift that keeps giving since it can be worn at several different events in different ways.  With velvet making a comeback and depending on your build, rocking a sportscoat is a great trendy option, as long as you don’t look like you’re wearing a smoking jacket.  You could go ultra-mod by wearing your jacket with a wide collard shirt or traditional in a suit and tie.  While classic suit colors like black and navy are always a win-win, depending on your season and complexion, a steel grey, tan or light beige might even work in your favor.  Truly, your possibilities are endless!

Ruffle Some Ruffles…

Leona Lewis in Marchesa  at the MTV Europe Music Awards

Marchesa dresses are known for their feminine lines, flowing fabrics or luscious ruffles.  When I saw the above dress, I thought it would be a beautiful choice for a bridesmaid’s dress, or even a bride looking to buck tradition and plant one right on fashion’s kisser. As a matter of fact, I remember reading back in June that Marchesa would be debuting a line of dresses “aimed at the impromptu bride“.

If you want to incorporate the layered or ruffle look into your bridal couture for your wedding day, here are some suggestions:
