Of course, for your wedding you should send out formal wedding invitations. However, for certain events like rehearsal dinners, e-vites can be the perfect option for request the presence of some of your favorite people. With destination weddings, some experts contend you should invite everyone who is a guest (read: traveled for) in your city. The notion is that you have several people who have traveled long hours and longer distances, so the kind thing to do would be to entertain them (again) and make them feel warm and toasty.

Rubbish.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do this. If you can afford it, you totally should. However, not everyone can or needs to. Traditionally, rehearsal dinners were for immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings) and those in the bridal party. Seems quaint and small, right? Now, more couples are opting for more casual events that are high energy, laid back, inclusive with the approach of “all who are in town can attend”. In fact, they are calling these fetes “Welcome Parties”; totally nixing the name “Rehearsal Dinner” altogether.

More often than not, almost every bride at some point complains that her groom isn’t doing “enough” to assist with the wedding planning. Depending on her scale of sanity, these expectations can be range from realistic to insane. For those ladies who have been “blessed” with a Groomzilla, this isn’t for you. It could be that he doesn’t know how to help or where to begin, or he recognizes your infinite wisdom and believes you have it all under control.

Remember, this is a totally new territory for your guy. Your dad, God bless him, has a slight edge in that he’s already done this. He’s experience it from a different vantage point, but he can recall everything involved. Your man, however, has been thrust into a world filled with lace, glossy bridal magazines, linen samples, and other bridal atrocities that make me want to go off to the deep end. Long gone are the days shooting pool with the guys or reading his kindle. His life is now consumed with wedding planning, and he really wants a bailout.

Honey, I’ve been married for ten years and I will tell you three things that a man will always be interested in: food, fashion and fun. These vary on the scale of importance to each man, but you know your guy…where does his interests lie? No matter the case for what can appear as his lack of enthusiasm, we’ll help you get through it:

Food: The old adage says the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Very true. If your guy is a health nut, foodie, or just loves to veg overall, let him take the steering wheel with the food. Don’t worry, he won’t make any bad decisions (he’s got you, after all, right?), but in the very off chance he seems to be deviating from the course, gently guide him back or offer him one of his outstanding ideas he hasn’t thought of yet (i.e., make him think he came up with it). For example, if your guy says at the catering consult that he just wants burgers and fries (trust me, it happens)—tell him that’s a fantastic idea and come up with some gourmet sliders and fresh cut fried potatoes for the cocktail hour or as a snack at your after party. What ever his likes are, find a way to incorporate them.

Fashion: While some guys are perfectly fine with a pair of shorts or old jeans and flip flops, your guy is meticulous about his looks right down to the hair on his head. Call around to tuxedo retailers and get catalogs for you to give to him. Listen as he gives his thoughts. Look through ads and shows of his favorite designers. What are some of his signature styles? Does he always wear a scarf or argyle socks? Make that mesh with the wedding look! Let him take the lead and watch him get completely enthralled with planning.

Fun: What does he like to do for fun? What do you two enjoy doing together? Is there any way that can be scaled up or down and integrated into your wedding? Let him handle the band or DJ—including the musical selections, setup, etc. Inspire other great ideas like a miniature golf set up if yours is a casual fun affair or even an interactive Wii station as the night goes on. Whether it’s music, games, lighting or a combo of the three—he’ll be game.

I am lucky enough to be in an area where our brides can have a choice of having their rehearsal dinner on either one of the islands. Being able to capitalize on the sun kissing you good night on the night before your wedding is so romantic and a great way to get into the destination wedding spirit. I loved the dramatic prints of this maxi dress, and when paired with the gold belt, it ultimately kicked it up a notch. After all, we’re a chic, but cultural casual look. I felt like the flowing nature of the fabric was quite fitting for the beach, while the interwoven design of both the cuff and earrings lent themselves to add more drama to the overall look. Pulling your hair back like J.Lo is practical and sexy—the beach winds will blow your hair to shreds, but the style also allows your face to garner more attention. Cue the gorgeous dangle earrings and a smoldering makeup palette and you’re fabulous. One of my favorite things to purchase for vacation whenever Captain America and I travel are barefoot sandals, as seen above. Heels will be pointless at the beach. You could opt for really cute sandals, but more likely than not, they will be kicked off within the hour. Barefoot sandals showcase your perfect pedicure, but also look great with a pair of flip flops.*** Don’t forget to add your favorite pashmina for when the evening begins to cool!***

Odd Man Out: Inviting Guests to Your Wedding Rehearsal Dinner

Going to weddings can be a lot of fun for people. For others– not so much. Why do you think that is? Well, if you are the significant other or spouse of a member in the bridal party or a guest, chances are you’re in unchartered territory. New town. New people. Lots of Travel. It’s always nice for the bride and groom to extend invitations to the SO’s of the bridal party for events that include the bridal party.

For example, if you’re having a rehearsal dinner, make sure you invite your Maid of Honor’s boyfriend or fiance…especially if they have flown in to spend this time with you. Nothing is worse than hearing “Hey honey, I have to go to the rehearsal and then to the party afterwards. You stay here in the hotel room”.

Yep, kinda awkward.

If you cannot afford to invite significant others to the rehearsal dinner– then seriously reconsider the type of rehearsal dinner you want to have. And definitely don’t make the mistake of allowing one and not the other. If you aren’t hosting the rehearsal dinner, talk to the person who is. You can either pad the budget or assume the event yourself. Besides, do you really want to risk slighting those friends and family who have agreed to stand up with you and have shown their support both financially and emotionally? It could make for awkward or even ill-feelings the next day, which should be the most important and stress free day of your life!
