From Fashion to Wedding: The Minimalist

This week we are taking a look of converting a fashion trend into an event vision for a wedding.  One of the big things in fashion right now is “minimalism”.  Of course, we can expect to see this spill over lusciously into weddings—be it decor, paper design or even food.  While being minimal may mimic monochromatic, it embraces and celebrates simplicity.  The look is very chic and contemporary, and done correctly it can create a timeless look.  The key is to find the correct balance between all of the elements involved so that your décor does not look sparse.  Here are just a few concepts to inspire you.

Getting Ruffled

Ruffles are all the rage this season, and I can’t think of a better design concept to throw into your wedding.  Let’s mosey along some beautiful details, shall we?

baby pink ruffled bridesmaids dress Lela Rose Style LR123halter ruffle bridesmaids dress lela Rose LR125 in ivorydestination wedding dress Dessy Group Style 1026 One shoulder white gown Destination wedding dress white Dessy group Style 1006 ruffle bodice with cap sleeves

Styles by Dessy Group:  Lela Rose bridesmaids in styles LR123 & LR125
Destination wedding gowns by Dessy  in styles 1026 & 1006

These ruffled bridesmaids dresses and wedding gowns are perfect because they do not border on “cutesy”—they allow the allure and sophistication of being a bride shine completely through.  As you can see with the last picture, even adding a gorgeous flower to your hair accents the gown instead of detracting from it.  However, if you have a flair for the dramatic…

Speaking of wedding flowers with a little ruffle—this would be a perfect way to incorporate the trend if you do not want to show it in the attire of your bridal party.  Look for extremely lush flowers such as ranunculus, peonies

What about accessories and other areas of the wedding? surely there has to be room for ruffles with shoes, bridal purses and cakes!

Remember, ruffles can add a very romantic and classic touch to your wedding if they are not overdone.  Enjoy and embrace the romance of ruffles!

We Likey: Unique Wedding Cake Stands

Besides the bride, the wedding cake is one of the most beautiful focal points that remain at the forefront at a wedding.  Most couples do not think to extend their design concept beyond their cake into their cake stands, so here are some great, unique stands that you could use for your cake.  Look in non-traditional places, home decor retailers, antique shops or even make your own!

I Want a Wedding like…Roselyn Sánchez :: Part Two

We’re back with the rest of our I Want a Wedding like…Roselyn Sánchez post.  Here are some other details from her wedding:

What she did…

Each place setting was embellished with beaded napkin rings, menus and flower blooms.

What you can do…

The same thing!  Nothing spells luxury and personal than to treat each guest to a beautiful place setting.  Make your napkin part of your design, by incorporating napkin rings, chargers, menus and even single blooms, berries or other props.  You can opt to make your napkin functional by using a pocket fold to hold your menus, place cards, flowers, thank you notes or favors.  (BBJ linen, Lendable Linens)

What she did

The wedding cake, albeit simple in design and color, was made very dramatic with the beautiful colored flowers, similar to the bridal bouquet.  She also opted to use a non traditional, but very contemporary cake stand, which allows the cake to be showcased.

What you can do…

round wedding cake with purple and blue sugar flowers iris square cake with fondant swag stacked on roses round cake with purple flowers ivory cake with large red flower on top

Your use of flowers can range from using real flowers, sugar paste flowers or a mix of the two.  Additionally, the placement of the flowers can add to the drama of the cake or create drama of its own.  Cascades, flowers atop or even in between tiers are just a few great ways to add this beautiful concept to your wedding cake. (Fleur De Lisa,Aunt Glenda’s Cakes, Fleur De Lisa, K Rose Cakes all from Brides.com)

Here are some non-pro shots of the wedding prior to setup:

What she did

I love these close ups of the actual flowers for the wedding because it shows the great mix of florals. Additionally, the urns are a wonderful example as to different ways you can enhance your venue.  If your venue has a garden or courtyard, and has several decorative urns, pots or stands, consider filling these with your wedding flowers to add to the overall event experience.

Here is a shot of Roselyn’s wedding event team putting together the linens for the ceremony chairs.   She used flowing chair jackets, bands and pads to tie in the rich and light colors in the architecture.

What you can do

pink chair caps and pink chair pads for wedding reception

Don’t wait to show off at your reception with your linens—incorporate them into your ceremony as well.  Go as far as using chair covers at your ceremony if you wish—begin the experience early.   (Top chair cap and jacket by BBJ Linen, second photo Wildflower Linen by Aaron Delesie)

What ever inspiration you draw from this celebrity wedding, remember to add your own unique twist on it…because you are fabulous, too!

Definition: Ganache

Milk chocolate ganache tart by Dorothy Lane
White Belgian chocolate ganache by Serendipity Cakes

ganache (uncountable)

  1. A rich creamy chocolate filling made of chocolate and cream, used for confections such as the filling of truffles.
  2. Heaven.

Ok, so I added #2, but it’s still true.  Ganache, while rich and not for the faint of heart, offers a delectable taste to your desserts. It can be used as a filling or or as a gloss like glaze for a cake.  Less cream means a firmer ganache which allows for more creative uses.  It really does complement other flavors like orange, strawberry and raspberry.

Sweet, Sweet Serendipity

I received an unexpected, but very sweet call on Friday from Ashlyn Seckinger of Serendipity Bakery in Saint Simons Island. Ashlyn and I originally met at a vendor cocktail party held at the Village Inn and Pub.  The next time I came across Ashlyn was when I stumbled upon one her beautiful cakes at the Jekyll Island Bridal Show.  I was in complete amazement as she presented a beautifully ornate and detailed wedding cake that I monikered "The J.Lo Cake", because it reminded me of Jennifer Lopez’s Wedding (#3) cake (only better).

Ashlyn called to ask if she could drop off a cookie platter for Christmas, and I was so honored and touched that she thought of us!

and just another plug 🙂 :

Thank you so much for thinking of us, Ashlyn!  We look forward to working with you very soon!

Cake Table Couture

Is your cake table design “blah”?  Do you have everything figured out but your cake table decor?  Have no fear, darlings! BBJ has new ideas in its bridal and cake table ideas gallery.  For example, how absolutely cute (and different) is this skirted (literally) cake table?  It adds texture and a cool, yet different design to the otherwise standard “white on white” fluffed cake table.  BBJ did another rendition of this skirted table, which is equally gorgeous, with even more depth.

Three Ways to Cut Cake Costs

saint simons wedding cakeThe wedding cake you’ve fantasized about can also be the one your wallet says “yes” to. Here are some great ideas for a more affordable – but still gorgeous – wedding cake.

  • Get a smaller cake. Show off the beautiful wedding cake for everyone to see, then have a sheet cake of the same flavor cut in the back.
  • Make mini cakes. Instead of one large cake, split up the cost and ask your baker to make every guest a cupcake of your favorite flavor instead. Top each with something pretty, and build a ‘wedding cake’ tower of your fabulous cupcakes.
  • Offer a dessert bar. Another great way to offer dessert while having a smaller cake: set up a dessert bar with mini pastries and coffee to offset a piece of wedding cake.
