Moonshine Cocktails for Weddings
May 25 2017

Moonshine for Your Wedding

When it comes to signature cocktails for your wedding, many people overlook moonshine.

Moonshine?  Yes, darling. Moonshine.

Believe it or not, moonshine has evolved quite a bit over the years into a well-crafted, full bodied spirit that can embody the personality of any event.  And well, being here in the South, you just gotta love it. Here are a few of our favorites:

Manhattan Moonshine

Manhattan Moonshine has to be one of the most beautiful bottles out there.  If you’re a Great Gatsby, Roaring 20’s lover like us, you love this little throwback design.  If you’re a spirits lover (also like us), you’ll love this smooth taste and body.  Fun recipes like the citrusy Vote for Pedro or the spicy Prince Street Cider make Manhattan Moonshine the perfect addition to your wedding bar, not to mention your décor.

Midnight Moon

Midnight Moon is good stuff, with almost a vodka-like taste. It also works very well for warm-weather recipes. We’ve used it several times for outdoor wedding receptions and parties with huge success. Signature Drinks like Raspberry Moonshine Lemonade  and Blueberry Basilito  are refreshing and delicious!

Sugarlands

Sugarlands Shine  is the real deal, straight out of Gatlinburg, Tennessee.  With some of the most amazing flavors like Apple, Cinnamon, Root Beer, Peach and so many more, there are endless possibilities for you to discover for your signature cocktail. For the OG Moonshine lovers, there are options available for you, too– the Silver Cloud Sour Mash and Unaged Rye are everything you are looking for. In fact, when we do our Moonshine & Cigar bars, many of our gents enjoy these!

Moonshine is very strong. It’s also an acquired taste.  You may want to consider offering a taste bar at your reception or select recipes made with moonshine during your cocktail hour.  Of course serving it in styled mason jars adds authenticity, but also serving it with fruit or sweet and spicy foods will be a hit.  If the idea of moonshine is a bit too much for you, talk to your caterer about incorporating it into a designer sauce or marinade for your hors d’oeuvres. Either way, ‘shine on!

Real Villa Marianna, Jekyll Island Wedding: Katie & Bradley

This wedding was quintessentially everything perfect and beautiful about Southern Weddings — soft color palette, lush florals and gorgeous surroundings of a historic area. When we initially met with Katie and Bradley, it started with a tour of the historic villas and while initially they wanted Villa Ospo, we were able to show them the many possibilities of spreading their event around the Millionaire’s District– with a wedding ceremony at Hollybourne and  a wedding reception at nearby Villa Marianna.

The day started off at the illustrious Jekyll Island Club Hotel. . .

What is so beautiful about this picture and had us all in tears is that this sweet gift was left by Bradley’s late mother for his wife on his wedding day.  Cue. the. tears.

I love this detail shot that Tamara took because it brings out some of my favorite designs, art deco.  Love the scallop texture in Katie’s wedges (a must if you are having your wedding outdoors, ladies!) as well as the art deco inspiration in her ring setting.

This first look was so beautiful.  Bradley who is always so composed, calculated and direct was moved to tears when he saw Katie for the first time.

When we designed the wedding, we knew that Katie wanted something very classic and vintage.  However, she still wanted it to be relaxed and fun.  We created intimate seating with long estate tables adjacent to small rounds to make it feel like everyone was still sitting together.  Lush florals were put in mercury compotes as a nod to the vintage elements, while we mixed metals for the candle holders. Since the entire event would be outdoors, soft cafe bulb lighting was overhead across the entire Villa Marianna lawn. Straton Hall worked their magic — literally making our sketches and style guide come alive!

The other thing I love about Villa Mariana are its multiple locations.  Initially, we designed the cake to sit atop the fountain on mirrored tiles, but moved it out to the lawn for better visibility.

We used one courtyard as Bradley’s cigar lounge and the other for the bar.  Katie had custom cobalt blue glasses made for each guest to take home as a favor.

Special Touch:  Hands down, Bradley’s mom leaving the bracelet for his future wife. Will never forget this.

Fun Moment:  Bradley recruiting some of his friends to serenade Katie on the dance floor.

Unique Detail: Cigar lounge was a welcome treat for the guys.

What Your Wedding Planner Wants You to Know About Your Wedding Photographer

wedding photographer saint simons island jekyll savannah jacksonville

Your photographer is the one thing you can’t afford to skimp on.

It is important that you love your photographer’s work and like them as well– any discomfort, stress or personality clashes will be seen on your photos.  This is why it is best to do an engagement shoot with your photographer.  Don’t allow your wedding day to be a test run. Get a sense for their shooting style and demeanor.

In a world of instant gratification, Snapchat, and Instagram, accept that you are not going to get all of your pictures right away. Also realize that your photographer is not going to practice dark, magical arts and manipulate your images with heavy editing, gratuitous cosmetic filters and the like.

Your photographer is a storyteller.

Your photographer is an artist.

Stories take time to tell. Art takes time to create.

Know that your photographer has their own style and gift.  Don’t ask them to conform or copy someone else’s style.

Your photographer is not a magician.  Please don’t ask for face swaps, digital cosmetic surgery, and other astronomical requests in Photoshop.

You will not see every image  that your photographer shot on your wedding day.  They are not all going to be attractive and for consumption.  Your photographer wants you to see your wedding day in a well crafted way. Trust your photographer’s judgement in what they allow you to see.

Your photographer knows how important this day is for you and they also know how excited you are. This is why your photographer is going to take their time to carefully edit the images so that the timeless capsule into your wedding day is just right.

Top 7 Amazing Places for your Rehearsal Dinner on Saint Simons and Jekyll Island

When planning your destination wedding in the Golden Isles, you’ll also have to plan an additional event on Saint Simons Island or Jekyll Island: your rehearsal dinner.  Of course, you will want your rehearsal dinner at a different location than your wedding. If your wedding ceremony and wedding reception are at a resort, there may be an alternative location to host your rehearsal dinner.  Also keep in mind, an off-site wedding rehearsal dinner is a great way for your family and friends to see more of the beautiful islands you’ve chosen to host your wedding festivities.

Saint Simons

Casino

Saint Simons Casino Wedding

The Saint Simons Casino is a local favorite for both weddings and rehearsal dinners.  Its open air atrium overlooks Neptune Park and the beautiful ocean makes it a perfect, casual location for a rehearsal dinner. You’re allowed to bring in your choice of caterer and supply your own alcohol, which makes this place a local favorite.    Being maintained by the County, there are certain regulations which are overseen by a County representative and police officer during the event.

Village Creek Landing

Village Creek Landing  is a favorite for nature enthusiasts as well as those looking for casual, rustic chic for their rehearsal dinner experience.  An exclusive Straton Hall venue, you’re in good hands as they will take care of everything  you need– food, alcohol and florals. Palm Coast

Nestled in the heart of The Village is Palm Coast.  A fun local favorite, Palm Coast has its own private courtyard where you can have live music and your own catering, while they provide the alcohol. This is perfect for those wanting something very casual and laid back, that will also allow guests the opportunity to explore The Village before or after the rehearsal dinner.

Real Jekyll Island Wedding : Kadi & Matt

Kadi and Matt’s Historic Jekyll Island wedding was one to remember.  There were so many details to fall in love with– Kadi’s art deco inspired wedding dress, the lush florals and the romantic sunset.  What out did everything was the sheer love these two felt for each other, which is clearly evident in every image of them together.

What made this day a success was how easy going and slow paced it was.  Both Kadi and Matt decided not to have any attendants in their bridal party.  Their day was spent getting ready, relaxing at the Westin Jekyll Island, ultimately getting ready for the romantic first look at Villa Marianna.  Matt waited for Katie, playing their favorite song from a vintage record player.  Their photos took them all over the historic district on Jekyll– from the Horton House ruins to the illustrious Driftwood Beach.

The two exchanged vows under the oaks at Moss cottage, surrounded by family and friends and a very special guest– their faithful dog. The wedding reception took place on the sprawling lawn of Indian Mound, Rockefeller Cottage across from the beautiful Jekyll Club Hotel.  Kadi wanted a modern take on a 20’s Great Gatsby style garden party.  We designed the entire wedding around a gorgeous white bar that featured boxwood hedges and vintage luggage.  The four sided bar featured different cocktails and spirits on each side.  Kadi’s brother created a custom microbrew just for her wedding and it was an absolute hit.  We also set up a loving memory table to honor Matt’s dad which featured some of his favorite cigars. The bar was surrounded by cocktail style seating and lounge furniture, where guests could enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres while watching dancing under the porte cochere.

This was such a beautiful wedding on all levels and we are so blessed to have been a part of it!

We Likey: Paperpless Post for Weddings

Screen Shot 2015-08-04 at 5.19.18 PM

Of course, for your wedding  you should send out formal wedding invitations.  However, for certain events like rehearsal dinners, e-vites can be the perfect option for request the presence of some of your favorite people. With destination weddings, some experts contend you should invite everyone who is a guest (read: traveled for)  in your city.  The notion is that you have several people who have traveled long hours and longer distances, so the kind thing to do would be to entertain them (again) and make them feel warm and toasty.

Rubbish.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t do this.  If you can afford it, you totally should.  However, not everyone can  or needs to.  Traditionally, rehearsal dinners were for immediate family (parents, grandparents, siblings) and those in the bridal party.  Seems quaint and small, right? Now, more couples are opting for more casual events that are high energy, laid back, inclusive with the approach of “all who are in town can attend”. In fact, they are calling these fetes “Welcome Parties”; totally nixing the name  “Rehearsal Dinner” altogether.

This is where Paperless Post shows up and shows off.  They have, seriously, the most amazing designs that would make the most formal of your guests swoon.  Additionally, they are very cost effective from sending traditional paper invites (especially if you are inviting your entire guest list) and are more welcoming than ambiguous information on your wedding website. Each digital invitation comes in a beautiful digital envelope in the script, color and liner of your choice.  Paperless Post uses a coin system to purchase invites, and 20 can be purchased for $6 (most designs range from free to 4 coins each).

Aren’t they divine?  And they’re just a small sample of options available.  With designers like Vera Wang, Hello! LuckyJ. Crew and many more, you’re sure to find something that tickles your fancy.  What could possibly make this better?  Well, for the true etiquette sticklers who you feel would move heaven and earth if they didn’t receive a paper invitation, you can purchase paper options to accompany your digital ones.

See? Now everyone’s happy!

How Much Will Your Wedding Cost?

how much will my wedding cost

Attempting to get an idea of your wedding costs can be extremely daunting. Having never planned a wedding before, running into proposals and pricing can give you a serious case of sticker shock. After spending countless hours on Pinterest, you’ll think that your favorite pins and boards performed a major miscarriage of trust.  Who knew those luxurious tall centerpieces were so much!? They want how much for that wedding cake?

We get it.  You don’t know what you don’t know. Falling in love with a vision and finding out it’s crushingly out of reach hurts.  So, we’re here to help.

But first, we need to do one thing.  And it’s kinda non-negotiable, okay?

Determine Your Budget. The most frustrating thing as a wedding professional is to speak with a couple and hear about their vision, and inquire as to how much they would like to spend and the response is “We don’t know how much this stuff costs”.  While that may be true— it also doesn’t answer the question.  This is the crux of your wedding planning.  Here’s an example, I would love a brand new Lexus LFA. . . but I don’t want to pay more than $30,000 for it.  I have no idea how much an Lexus LFA is, but I do know that if it is over $30,000 (which I’m 98.6% sure it is) I won’t be in it, and I know not to look at pictures or do a test drive. So, there’s my budget— $30,000.  The same applies to weddings. And trust me, everyone has a budget.

Got your figure?  Now, let’s talk about what everyone else wants to charge. Keep in mind this is for our service area for Saint Simons Island and Jekyll Island weddings.  These figures can fluctuate in different locations. Additionally, these are averages— there will be services that fall below and above the prices given.

venues :: $2000+

An average venue rental will start at $2000.  If the venue is attached to a hotel, you can expect to pay more or be required for mandatory room blocks.  The likelihood of a the venue having exclusive catering rights (meaning you have to use their caterer for food and beverage) grows higher with its affiliation to a hotel or convention center.  These types of venues may also have a food and beverage minimum to meet in addition to the venue rental.  These can start between $5,000 to $10,000.

Catering :: $35+ per person

This  is an average that should include your hors d’oeuvres at cocktail hour, dinner and non alcoholic beverages such as tea, water and lemonade.  This rate will vary according to the reception style you choose (e.g., buffet vs. plated) as well as the menu selections and quantities. Keep in mind this is menu pricing only, you will still have to factor in labor (which will vary according the number of guests and dinner service you will have), tax (6%) and a service charge (will vary between 18-22%). Some caterers include the costs of plates, flatware and glassware with the menu price, others do not.  Be sure to view quotes in their totality when comparing them.

Wedding Cake :: $4-8 Per Person

Like your catering, this price will be determined by your selections and guest number.  Customizations such as flavors, fillings, cake design and even shape can add to the price.  If your caterer offers cake, you can add this to your menu price. If you are hiring an outside baker, remember to leave cushion for delivery as well as cake service (cake cutting, plates, forks, etc.) from your caterer.

Alcohol :: $18-$60 Per Person

One of the great thing about having a wedding in Saint Simons Island or Jekyll Island is the abundance of venues that allow you to bring your own alcohol. If you are purchasing your own alcohol, expect to pay anywhere between $1500 to $4500 or more depending on the number guests, type of bar (beer and wine vs full bar), what type of liquor you wish to provide (well vs top shelf) and how long you intend to provide a bar (the typical reception is 4 hours).  If you are having your wedding at a hotel or convention center where they require that you purchase your alcohol from them you can opt to pay by the drink with a consumption bar which ranges from $5 to $10 per drink or about $45 per person for a drink package that lasts four hours.   Our planners have a great alcohol guide to help you budget and plan for your bar.  Remember if you plan for authentic martinis and champagne, you may need to rent the appropriate glassware.

Photography & cinematography :: $2500+

One of the major things that affect price for cinematography and photography are the length of hours shooting, as well as the style of the shooter.  The longer the coverage and the more modern and stylish the product, the higher the rate.  The above rate is a general average for about 4 hours of coverage.  Full day coverage, additional shooters and multiple locations may affect pricing.  Remember to consider the costs of post production such as additional disks, full length movies, albums and portraits which are always an additional cost.

entertainment :: $1000+

A typical wedding DJ will start at about 1000 for four hours of service. A band starts at about $2500. This will include the cocktail hour and three hours of the reception.  Additional locations and hours for the ceremony or extension of the reception will require additional hours.

Florals :: $2000+

Some of the most pinned images used for wedding inspiration are of lush bouquets and elaborate centerpieces.  These are typically comprised of a multitude of large, exuberant blooms in varying heights and accents. Usually, a bridal bouquet will range anywhere between $150-$300, with complementary bridesmaids’ bouquets being half that.   Centerpieces can have several different concepts with some designs being tall and others low.  Tall arrangements depending on their size and proportion can start at $175 and go as high as $400.  Low arrangements can start at $75 to $200. It’s always best to ensure you are picking in-season florals to keep your costs in a doable budget.  Here is a really great breakdown of floral costs of magazine worthy florals.

Final Thoughts. . .

These are just averages to give you an idea.  Your wedding costs will be specific to your needs, size of guest list and time of year ( this plays a major part in the seasonality of certain foods and flowers).  You should set aside at least 10% of your budget each for a wedding planner, photographer and florist.
