It’s the Little Things…

A lot of times, I will get to a wedding where things have slipped the poor bride’s mind (even if I remind her).  So here is just a gentle reminder of things to take note of (or give to someone else so they can remember for you).

Guestbook Pens–These have to be the number one most forgotten things in the history of time.  Depending on what you are using for a guestbook, make sure you are using the right type of writing utensil for your medium.  For example, this could include Sharpies for polaroids, acid-free pens for photo mats and scrapbooks, etc.  For the classic guestbooks, try to avoid the regular Bic pen on your table.  You’ve spent thousands on your wedding, splurge a little more on the pen (LOL you say, “Terrica, I have splurged! That’s why I’m using a Bic pen!”).  You can do something that the MOB did at my last wedding– she dressed up her pens as gorgeous flowers in the wedding colors to sit in a vase by the guestbook (similar to the photo at the right).

The picture-  I wish I could put exclamation marks next to that one.  I have seen so many couples who love to do the signature photo mat, but seriously– they put an empty frame up at the reception. It’s almost like the Sopranos finale (LOL, I know I keep bringing that up): when guests get to the frame and it’s empty. Big letdown.  If you want them to write nice sentiments to you or about you, give them some motivation with your picture!

Trashy Brides

All of you know that I heart Mark Eric of the Trash the Dress phenomenon. Well, ME has done it again– trashing The New York Times!  The New York Times has done a great feature on trashing the dress and features some of ME’s work!  (The photo to the right was done by John Michael Cooper, the Father of Trashing the Dress “movement”).

Go Inside

Inside Weddings My favorite Blue Orchid, Liene, says “If it’s in the bridal magazines, it’s already out.” This is true…it seems like a majority of the bridal publications have all the same ads, articles, questions, etc. but are trying so hard to be different. Thank goodness before my flight I picked up some wedding sugar wrapped in glossy pages. If you are looking for truly innovative ideas and content, check out Inside Weddings. If on the off chance your local bookstore doesn’t carry it, you can subscribe online (or even see if you can score a few issues on eBay).

Gitchi Gitchi Ya Ya Da Da…

No, I’m not practicing my baby talk.  After the Soprano’s disappointing finale, my unborn child has already heard a few choice words.  I’m singing the lyrics to the super sultry and suggestive, Lady Marmalade.  It is also the inspiration for this week’s storyboard, Lady Marmalade.  Painted in red in black and shrouded in mystery and romance, this is a great starting point for your Moulin Rouge themed wedding.  Inspired by the movie and Cirque du Soleil , we bring a culmination of elements to appeal to the senses.  Though there are some key things we would change to make this more dynamic for the client, we hope it inspires you! See you next week, when our new storyboard will be….(LOL you’ll have to come back to find out!)

Sushi, please…Hold the Fish. Heavy on the Candy.

dessert-candy-sushi.jpgI’n not even going to pretend I can do anything heavier than the classic California Roll when me and Mr. Terrica go to our favorite sushi restaurant. Even our daughter and son enjoy it and you know how fickle kids are. I had a uber-cute client share this idea with me that she wants to do for her wedding…Get ready. Dessert Sushi. How cute is that! Instead of a candy bar (which she has grown weary of seeing as of late), we are going a dessert sushi bar. Too cute, huh?

So in prep for this, I’ve been reading about what it consists of as well as sketching and boarding some ideas for the bar table. As you can see, swedish fish and little cakes are used and decorated to look just like sushi. Not Martha has been a wonderful resource in learning more about making this “delicacy” as well as other recipes and options. Flickr has some great pictures of the different ways that you can present and woo your guests with dessert sushi

I Love My Job…I Love My Job…I Love My Job…

Cue the new season of Bridezillas!  You just HAVE to love the emotional, irrational, tyrranical wedding goodness the We network provides us every week.  I’m not sure why a bride would want to classify herself as a bridezilla, but apparently these ladies have hit the nail on the head. I’m glad that I haven’t had any clients go this extreme!

Miss Holiday, She Has Arrived

I’m an old soul.  I don’t deny it. I don’t make excuses for it. I don’t even apologize for it.  I’m old.

Seriously– Ask me the last movie I watched…(Streetcar Named Desire)  Ask what just played in iTunes (Billie Holiday).  The point is that I have a very fine appreciation for the things of yesteryear. Growing up in Baltimore, one is immersed in the cool and languid sounds of the great legends this city has spawned.  Don’t get me wrong– I still heart everything from R&B to Rock to Rap to Country to Classical.  It’s that well-roundedness (is that a word?) that gives me my edge (or at least, that is what I will claim).  But I am always a big jazz standards fan– Ella, Billie, Sarah…totally adore them.

For years, I have seen critics desperately dub the next up and coming star as the “New Billie Holiday”.  Everyone from Erykah Badu to Macy Gray.  Billie’s voice was an entity with in itself.  Her passion just put you into overdrive.  Her sassiness had your mouth ajar in disbelief (this woman sweetly croons, “These foolish games you keep playing…Might work with somebody else. But I could have told you right from the start no man is man enough to break my heart” in the ultimate Break Up Song “Baby I Don’t Cry Over You”).  Some of the mentioned artists came close, but something was missing.  Well, she has arrived.  Enter Amy Winehouse.  Her new album, Back to Black   is tres Billie with a touch of Lauryn Hill, backed by fantastic beats and rock melodies.

If you’re looking for something new to rock out to at the gym or sing loud on your way to work, check her out!

Congratulations, Leah and Jason!

I absolutely LOVED this wedding. It was such a pleasure working with Leah’s mom  through out the past year, but seeing Leah and Jason interact, was awesome.  Just the simple things– a quick laugh or secret, dancing, small talk.  You can tell there is such a strong love between them.

Their beautiful wedding was held on Saturday at the Crane Cottage at the Jekyll Club Hotel.  We all braved the heat (“little” brother Eric included…who swears that  venomous bee attacked him.  One of my favorite go-to-groomsmen ever!) and kept the party going until 1 am to celebrate the union of such a lovely couple.  The only moment that topped the Auburn fan fare at the groom’s cake cutting was the stunningly romantic dance between the Best Man and Groom to “Forever Yours“.  A real tearjerker (and side splitter)!

Leah and Jason– all the best to you!  We hope that you continue to grow in the love and faith that you share in the many years to come in your marriage. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your very special day.  The uber-fabulous Eric and Adrienne Delaforce were the photographers for this wedding, so stay tuned for pictures!

Keeping the Party Going…

A lot of our clients are opting to make a full weekend out of their weddings.  We always love doing this, because when you think of it– your guests are coming a long way for your *destination* wedding.  What better way (if you can afford it) to keep the party going by having a brunch the next morning with your family and friends.  We are seeing a huge rise in “Welcome Parties” (versus rehearsal dinners) and “Sunday Brunches” in our weddings here.  You may find that your venue/hotel will be really receptive and could give you a good deal if you are hosting your events all at one place.

Yet, I digress. Let’s get to the real reason why this post is here. Food.  Picking the food for your other events are just as important as taking the time to plan your reception menu.  For your brunch, we have found these uber-cute ideas.  Take, for example, the French Toast Kabobs from Martha Stewart (of course).  They are fun and different and can be a conversation piece for your brunch.  Other great treats are Breakfast Pizza, Bourbon Beignet Puffs, frittatas, and dumplings.  Pick a few favorites and offer them buffet style, complemented by muffins, your traditional breakfast meats and fresh fruit.  And why not have a signature drink at your brunch too!  You could go for the opulence of mimosas (these are my favorites in the morning whenever I travel *swoon*) or smoothies.

If your caterer or venue boasts that they can cook anything then take them up on it!  You are not and should not be limited to just what they put down on the menu.  You may find that you can not only get what you want, but you may be able to save money as well!  Look for innovative recipes at www.marthastewart.com , www.allrecipe.com or www.recipe.com (two of my favorites, as you can see).

Freshly Pressed

Lately, the rage (or at least the talk) of the bridal town has been letterpress invites. They are indeed beautiful and well-crafted.  The intricacies within the design and hefty weight of the paper do lend to give an Old World feel.  Since the invitation sets the stage for the entire event for the wedding guest, it is quite understandable why couples want to make an early impression.

White Aisle (featured right) has GORGEOUS letterpress designs.  While they may be nice in conversation (as opposed to price!), it may spark some inspiration for you.Â
