The Big Day

October 31, 2007

wed3.jpgAs of October 27, 2007, I am officially married! Hooray. After two (short) years of planning, Joe and I managed to finally have a wedding, and it was FABULOUS if I do say so myself, and I do. I’m not even sure where to begin. Our wedding was at the Gingerbread House in Savannah, GA, with the majority of the guest list from various places in the Northeast. I’d been telling everyone for weeks how warm it’d been down here, and that “last year at this time I was on the beach.” So clearly, it was sort of cold and dreary, and rainy for the majority of my wedding weekend. I joked with a friend that we had nothing to worry about weather-wise since GA had been in a drought for almost a year – HA! Who knew that the only thing holding the weather back all this time had been my nuptials. It will more than likely never rain again in GA after this past weekend; the whole state will actually dry up and fall off into the sea…but it had to be a monsoon wedding on my big weekend!

..It did manage to be fairly nice out for the actual day of the ceremony, so I was thrilled. Everything more or less went off without a hitch, which I think, is basically unheard of. All of the smooth sailing can be attributed to a number of factors, not the least of which is that the O’s other fabulous intern, Lindsay, graciously agreed to be by “Day of Coordinator.”

And may I just say she was fabulous. I haven’t the slightest idea how people go without one. I barely managed the planning of the wedding without any professional assistance, but attempting to run the whole show while actually being the one getting married is CRAZY. Lindsay was great. She showed up early to make sure that everything was going as planned: DJ arriving, things set up correctly, caterer getting there, the whole bit. She escorted guests to the courtyard when they arrived, and helped hide the groomsmen up stairs in their room until it was time for the ceremony to begin. She was kind enough to field my crazy phone calls all day, repeatedly asking about the status of everything. She even dealt with the police for me when some crazy (clearly parentless) teens decided to crash my wedding photo session! It was quite a scene.

Joe and I wrote our own vows which proved to be extremely scary on the day of the wedding, but I’m so happy that we did it. I think really thinking about what you want to say, and knowing that it’s coming from the heart made a big difference in the way our ceremony felt. We both incorporated references to our family and friends being at the wedding, and I think it made for a very personal, intimate feel.

Thereafter, I wanted a very non-traditional all out party. We had heavy hors d’ouevres for dinner and no assigned seating which made for a very mingle-y relaxed feel. I really wanted to eliminate a lot of the traditional events (cake cutting, bouquet tossing, etc.) because I felt like all that shuffling people around to watch me smush cake into Joe’s face would take away from the party, and I wanted the party…and honey, we GOT the party. It was great – everyone drinking and dancing and chatting, and enjoying the food and our ice cream wedding cake.

Yes. I said ice cream cake. I hate wedding cake. So we opted for two ice-cream cakes from Coldstone Creamery. One (mine) had Sweet Cream Ice Cream, brownies, fudge, yellow cake, pecans and was covered in a layer of chocolate ganache. The other (Joe’s) was a Cookies and Cream cake complete with Oreo Ice Cream, yellow cake, and vanilla frosting. I am drooling on the keyboard just thinking about it. They were a HIT.

At the moment I’m going through a little post-partum-style depression now that all the planning for the big day is over. Thank goodness I got this gig with the O and can keep planning weddings for other people…I think I’m in love with it. Okay who’s next….?

Ok. That was a bit dramatic. But this will help you.

Last week, I was laying in my bed all by my onesies (for once…no small people staging a military coup and commandeering my bed…), and I decided I was going to work on some accounts before I went to bed. I reached over to my night table to get my bottled water, twisted the cap and SPLASH! I’ve spilled a little under a teaspoon of water on my laptop. To be more detailed, on the mouse pad, where it soon flowed into the crevices above the hardware.

Great.

Oh, but it doesn’t stop there. The laptop actually POPS . The screen goes white…then black and cuts completely off. What do, I, the genius do? Attempt to turn it back on. It acted like it wanted to work for a second and then cut off….and would not cut back on.

Here I am, dumbfounded and on the cusp of an upcoming event, and my main tool has just been supersoaked (again with the dramatics).

I call HP– who have the worst customer service, BTW (not because they are mean or nasty, but because I have to keep saying the same thing over and over again to 50 different people). They say will send a box out by FedEx and will repair it, however, all of my data will be erased.

Those were fightin’ words.

I sat back…breathed in and out (would’ve been drinking if not for the new diet) and thought out my next plan. Then I remembered my mother washed her iPod in the washing machine and sat it in a bowl of rice overnight and now, she’s jammin’ on iTunes just like the rest of the iPodaholics. What do I do? Well first, I opened the casing to see if there was any water (when the people at HP told me to remove the battery, a little water ran out). There was no water so I closed it back up. Then, I spread a towel out on my vanity and dumped an ENTIRE bag of rice on it and sat the laptop on it.

By the grace of God it cut on the next morning. Everything is perfectly fine– data in place and everything.

I heart you Uncle Ben!

Birthday Cake Shot by LiquorSnob

…And today’s my birthday! WOOO HOOOO! Wait. I mean it’s the anniversary of my 21st birthday.

I’ll be spending it…probably doing the same thing I usually do— work and play with my kidlets :) What did I get myself this year? 2 inches off my waist and 2 inches off my thighs!!

Almost makes it a shame that I am going to put it back on when I have my birthday cake… But I sit back and I think, “What have I learned?”, “What makes me different this year from last year?” Well I’ve learned:

  • Beauty fades, dumb is forever.
  • You can have anything in this world if you want it bad enough and are willing to pay the price to get/have it.
  • Hearing my kids call me “Mommy” and run and hug me trumps any and every prima donna moment in my previous diva life.
  • That anyone who purchases heels four inches and taller should be required to obtain a permit and take a class.
  • Sometimes the heavy bag punches back.
  • Needing someone is like needing a parachute; if they’re not there for you once, chances are you won’t be needing them again.
  • You never know the type of day another person is having or the current predicament they might be in…try not to expound or dump on them.
  • The best thing I’ve found is a wonderful man who loves me and thinks I’m hot after eight years of marriage and three babies. (Yup, a keeper)
  • Some days you’re the pigeon…Some days you’re the statue.
  • It doesn’t matter who says “sorry” first. (As long as it isn’t me. LOL ok, kidding!)
  • You can’t fix stupid.

I’m sure I could go on and on with more “Terrica-isms” but I’m going to go on a living spree for my birthday!

So for my birthday, have a Birthday Cake Shot and think of me!

Here is the recipe, courtesy of LiquorSnob:

Preparing the shot glass:

• 1/2 shot vodka
• 1/2 shot Frangelico hazelnut liqueur
Slice and have ready:
• One slice of lemon per shot
On a small plate place two tablespoons of sugar per shot.
After you have you finished mixing your drink, take a lemon slice and dip both sides of it in the sugar kept on the plate. Lick the sugar off the lemon (don’t swallow the sugar now), take the shot, swallow, and now bite the lemon slice and relish the chocolaty and exotic flavor of the Birthday Cake Shot.

Happy Birthday, Liene!

lolcatsdotcomq0sgjxfx758rcuy9.jpgHappy Birthday, Liene!

Super gorgeous and uber talented Liene of Blue Orchid Designs is celebrating her birthday today!  Be sure to go by and visit her (bearing gifts of course! LOL) and say “Happy Birthday!”

And Liene isn’t adopted. She just gets a kick out that picture!

weddinginvite.jpgJust a little bridal humor to start your week!  I have no idea where it came from,  but Randi of Always Fabulous Events shared it with us over at iWED and we thought it was hilarious!  I have seen it circulating around some other online forums as well.

Crap. I Got Tagged.

via FoxyTunes    I typically don’t respond to tags.

And I should.

They’re fun!
Uber-stylish modern day Audrey Hepburn, Kimberly Petyt of Parisian Events, tagged me in her recent post, Green in Paris. Unfortunately, I don’t have a thing to add! I just realized how un-green I am! It was tragic!

I drive a HUGE gas guzzling Yukon XLT. Ok, actually it’s good on gas. The truck has everything and does everything…except make it’s own freakin’ payments. But I digress. I schedule my week in advance, so besides taking the kidlets to school, I schedule all of my tasks, appts, etc. on one day. Perhaps this can be counted as prevent fuel emissions?

Ok next.

I wash my clothes and run my dishwasher at night. I don’t know if this saves money or energy. I’ll get back to you.

(Look, I said I wasn’t green. Al Gore is going to hate me.)

I thought about using those new eco-lightbulbs.

(Gosh, this is starting to look bad for me.)

I turn my air conditioner off at night, and make it a point to turn off lights when they aren’t being used.

Ok. So I need to get my act together– especially if this is all I can think of. But thank you for the motivation, Kim!

Okay, so you always hear us talking about having signature drinks at your wedding. Well this just takes it to the next level of amazingness. They are martini Ice Luges.  You choose your signature drink, then you can have different fruits, flowers, or really whatever you want frozen inside to match your theme. Your drink is poured in the top and runs through the ice, coming out into your glass. How “cool” is that?

Since these are obvioulsy frozen you will need to find a local ice sculptor.  I would just google it to find someone in your area.

Trust me, your guests will totally be in awe, and these ice luges will help make your signature drink a little more “signature”.

Mr. Palercio, my former junior high teacher, loved to use this phrase with students who’d forgotten to turn in assignments on time.  “A day late and dollar short,” he’d say when you approached his desk long after the bell had rung with your attempt at last night’s homework done in the hallway between classes. As I sit here at my desk, that phrase is replaying itself over and over in my mind.  Damn you Palercio…had I only heeded your wise warnings.

My wedding is five days from now and I sit here attempting to do all sorts of last minute things I should have taken care of last month.  My wedding is in Savannah, although my entire guest list is coming from somewhere out of state and it’s been a fairly large undertaking to try to deal with all of the out of town guests.  I felt I was doing pretty well so far.  I blocked off a number of rooms at various hotels in and around Savannah, at various price points.  I arranged for a trolley to cart guests back and forth between their downtown hotels and the wedding location and I booked a group flight through Continental for 20 of my closest New Jersey pals (if I had time to blog about two things, the group flight would be the other one.  Do it! It’s the best!)

So here I am, thinking I’m on top of things.  Sure!  Well, my dear friend and(always-supremely- prepared-for-any-trip-or-event-right-down-to-the-excel-spreadsheet-itinerary) bridesmaid, otherwise known as “Captain Travel” called me not to long ago to inform me that she was in the process of writing up a timeline for my wedding because, “nobody knows what’s happening, Abby.”  Mr. Paler…I mean, Captain, I was getting to that…I swear I was just about to do it.

I had, in fact, planned to create cute little weekend timelines that I’d pass out to the front desks at all the various hotels, complete with maps, schedules, and Connect Savannah magazines with all the information about what is happening in the city this weekend. Fab, right?  Easier said than done.  I have successfully just pulled some time lines together, although the maps aren’t coming along as easily as I’d hoped, and I’m having trouble compiling 80 copies of the magazine. Not to mention the fact that my guests are scattered around the entire city of Savannah. Bah!

In true day late and dollar short form, I was mucking around on The Knot website and stumbled across a great idea that would have be fabulous had I seen it say, last month; creating your own wedding website.

The Knot offers a number of options, some free, others for a small fee, to create your own informative little site about your wedding.  Where guests can go to stay updated on all the details about your big day: where the rehearsal dinner will be, maps to the ceremony and reception sites, what time all the festivities begin and more. This fab little idea will keep even the most intense Captain Travel in your life happy.  And, if you happen to be Captain Travel, you’d probably even have the presence of mind to have one of these sites up and running before you send out the invitations so you can add all the site information in along with your other wedding invites.  The site will even let guests RSVP online. (gasp!) I know traditionalists everywhere hate that idea, but so what, you save a tree, and save yourself a headache, and possibly even come out a day early and a few dollars up.

If you are the bride with lots of dynamic and bold colors and textures, your food should reflect that style as well.  I came across this awesome recipe for Tequila Lime Shrimp. It will awaken any palate and is also good for your bridal luncheon or dinner at home for your honey!
Jumbo shrimp sauteed in garlic, cilantro, and tequila.

• Prep Time: 10 Minutes
• Cook Time: 10 Minutes
• Ready In: 20 Minutes
Yields: 6 servings

INGREDIENTS
• 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 4 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 1/2 pounds large shrimp – peeled and deveined
• 1/2 cup tequila
• 1/2 cup chopped fresh cilantro
• salt and pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS
1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Saute garlic until light brown. Place shrimp in the pan, and cook for 3 minutes.
2. Pour in tequila, and season with cilantro, salt, and pepper. Cook for 2 more minutes.   Squeeze lime juice over shrimp.

Little Captain America :)

October 22, 2007

delete-137.JPGOk, how much do you  just LOVE the “Mommy, WHAT in the world are you doing?” look on his face!?

Ladies and gents, I present to you Little Captain America :)   I realized I hadn’t blogged about my new sweet darling since I had him. Well there he is :)   We’ve been calling him Sinatra because of his eyes (Ol’ Blue Eyes).  I swear, he really has to be the best baby…ever. He smiles all the time; and we are thisclose to sleeping through the night (YES!).

I call him Little Captain America because, he looks JUST like his daddy. And, I guess that is to be expected– his daddy had been deployed for five months prior to his birth.  The night he was scheduled to land at Jacksonville airport, I went into labor on the interstate on the way to go get him!  So the baby was born within an hour of him arriving home.  Talk about cutting it CLOSE!
